2017 California SAF Winter Meeting
January 19 @ 9:00 am - January 20 @ 5:00 pm
The Society of American Foresters started in California in 1916. As we move into our second century, we will meet as a unified California Society of American Foresters. This meeting will feature an outstanding program on forestry and forest management in a geographic area supporting nearly 19 million people. We have a great meeting location lined up, with easy access to local airports. The program is of value to forest managers, policy makers, agency leaders, and members of the public in both northern and southern California. We look forward to an excellent dialog with all members of the California forestry and forest conservation community.
Specifically, the meeting will focus on 1) forest and natural resources management on lands adjacent to urban areas, 2) the role of citizens and communities in creating sustainable and resilient landscapes, 3) forest management strategies on federal and private ownerships, to meet landowner objectives and address sustainability, and 4) forest management and its role in providing sustainable, resilient, and diverse wildlife habitat, all while offering recreational opportunities for a highly diverse population. The meeting will conclude with a discussion on community involvement and look at approaches to create sustainable communities with engaged and enlightened citizens.
Thursday will start off with the joint NorCal/SoCal Executive Committee meeting. It will be held at the County of Los Angeles Fire Department Camp 2, at 4810 North Oak Grove Drive, in La Cañada Flintridge. Enter through the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) security stop, letting them know that you are attending the SAF meeting at Camp 2. After security, make a quick right on Surveyor Road and follow the signs to Camp 2. There is ample parking, just follow the “Training Parking” signs. We will meet in the Camp’s classroom. The meeting is open all interested parties. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about current forestry issues and see the how they can become involved in their professional organization.
For a fascinating Thursday afternoon, we have scheduled a private tour of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. If you plan on attending this tour, please indicate your citizenship during registration. Please also bring a form of government identification, such as a state-issued driver’s license. It will be a short five-minute walk from Camp 2 to NASA JPL. After the tour, we will return to Camp 2 for the Forester/Student Social. This will offer an informal environment to reconnect with friends, meet with students, and share stories, experiences, and opportunities in the forestry profession.
